I've managed to renew Helen's concern about my sanity, as I launch the quixotic mission to start an online political journal. As the level-headed person she is, Helen very quickly identified the obstacles facing this endeavor: Most people don't like to write as much as I do, and those that do already have their own blog.
I know it will be an uphill struggle too, but figure that it's worth a try and that even a handful of interesting articles would be good.
This was another example of a deep personality conflict between me and Helen. She's a straight-shooter who appreciates frank criticism of her own ideas. I'm very timid about criticizing anyone's ideas that I think are silly, especially if the failure of the idea would cause no harm.
It's tempting to think that my stance is more noble--After all, I'm doing my part to encourage people to pursue whatever their heart desires. But the downside of this "nobility" is that I can be too prickly in regards to my own ideas, so that I force people to walk on eggshells when they say something I don't want to hear.
"Give it to me straight! I can take it," is Helen's motto. I'll try harder to make that my motto too.
