Ever since we've moved to New York City, I've loved going to movies. This doesn't make economic sense, as Manhattan prices are outrageous. I must just like the feeling of having three theaters in walking distance. Side effects of this craze include feverish perusals of the Friday reviews in the Times, as well as ponderous reflection about the New Yorker's reviews.
Helen is more rational than me, so the mere proximity of theaters doesn't alter her behavior. She's both teased and expressed frustration at this craze. But as always she supports me in the end. One of my Christmas presents was a nice set of movie gift certificates.
Congrats on your first blog entry! =)

I envy you the New York movie scene. While there are many wonderful things about Birmingham, we just have a few chain theaters and they tend to just handle the big distribution films, so we don't get a lot of the limited run things. There is, however, a pretty good local film community that has run a festival for several years that is getting increasing national attention. (See http://www.sidewalkfest.com/)

Ponderous reflection? I'm stunned. Still, it is nice that you think once in a while...

one of the most frustrating things about being a new york times reader who doesn't live in new york is knowing about so many movies, art shows, theater, music, that isn't going on here in washington. at least with movies, stuff gets here eventually.
btw, i love the picture of you reading the NYT or other paper. it's so appropriate.

What about live theater? Off-broadway and experimental shows don't have broadway prices and can be ... interesting. And there's always the half-price booth at times square.
An increasing number of movies are coming back to life as Broadway productions - first The Producers, now Monty Python and the Holy Grail
