1. The first year business school students and their partners are in town now, because classes start in a few weeks. Tonight the Haas Partners Club hosted a happy hour at Jupiter; as the co-president of the club, of course I stopped by.
We had a great turnout. Towards the end of the night, I discovered that all the first year students and partners were headed to Tuesday night karaoke at the Shattuck Down Low. This made me smile, and then it made me feel old! It's exactly what we would have done one year ago.
2. Berkeley--the entire East Bay, actually--is in the midst of a drought. As part of the response, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is encouraging restaurants to conserve water.
Three times recently I've walked into restaurants (two Thai, one Mexican) displaying numerous signs which claim that water will only be served on request. Three times I've thought to myself, "Do I really want water?...Well, yes...but I can drink less!"
And three times, before I've concluded these brief reflections, a restaurant server has come over to give me water without me having to ask for it.
Perhaps a summer intern for the EBMUD is schlepping to restaurants all over town handing out these signs. Whomever is doing it, the point of the campaign is clearly not sinking in. That's fine by me, because I like my water. But I do try to drink less. I'm not sure if this does any good, but at least it doesn't hurt anything (I hope) and it makes me feel better.
You can also shower less. Once a week sounds like a pretty good showering schedule =)
