I envy you the New York movie scene. While there are many wonderful things about Birmingham, we just have a few chain theaters and they tend to just handle the big distribution films, so we don't get a lot of the limited run things. There is, however, a pretty good local film community that has run a festival for several years that is getting increasing national attention. (See

one of the most frustrating things about being a new york times reader who doesn't live in new york is knowing about so many movies, art shows, theater, music, that isn't going on here in washington. at least with movies, stuff gets here eventually.

btw, i love the picture of you reading the NYT or other paper. it's so appropriate.



What about live theater? Off-broadway and experimental shows don't have broadway prices and can be ... interesting. And there's always the half-price booth at times square.

An increasing number of movies are coming back to life as Broadway productions - first The Producers, now Monty Python and the Holy Grail
